A walker is a great support to help you get back to your daily activities after a stroke. But, it is important you remember a couple things when using the walker, or it will become unsafe. Remembering a couple safety basics will make a huge impact towards independence and successful participation in daily activities.
- Know what type of walker you have
- Know how to stop!
- Stand up straight
- Keep your body within the walker; don’t let it get too far ahead of you
- Go slowly in new areas, be aware of the terrain, i.e. carpet vs wood floors
- Don’t use your walker to assist you in standing up; push from your chair
