Managing Post-Stroke Fatigue

Post-stroke fatigue is a common experience for many stroke survivors and is part of the healing process following your stroke.

One way to manage post-stroke fatigue is by using energy conservation techniques to help you balance activity and rest throughout your day to day life. Energy conservation techniques can be beneficial no matter what type of fatigue you are experiencing.

There are four main energy conservation strategies that we can start with. These are general strategies that can be applied in many different ways throughout your day.

  • Prioritizing: Decide which activities are the most important in your daily life.
  • Planning: Prepare yourself and your environment to set yourself up for success.
  • Pacing: Slow and steady wins the race! Pacing is an important part of balancing your energy exertion throughout your day.
  • Positioning: Make sure your body is well supported throughout your daily activities, to ensure your energy is being directed towards your activity.
