Honoring Stroke Caregivers: Janice’s Story as John’s Lifeline
The American Stroke Foundation (ASF) is dedicated to supporting stroke survivors and their families. For caregivers like Janice, who stands by her husband, John, this mission highlights how essential support and community are when faced with life’s sudden challenges.
John’s health struggles began years before his stroke in 2023. After three heart attacks and surgery in 2013, he faced heart problems again while traveling to a sports event in Utah last year. After making it as far as Denver, they turned around and drove back to Kansas City, where doctors found he had heart failure. Later, in the hospital, a blood clot led to John’s stroke, changing their lives forever.
As a caregiver, Janice encountered a steep learning curve filled with questions and the need to coordinate with various healthcare providers. The support of her three adult daughters was invaluable in helping her navigate the medical world. Creating a routine became essential for managing her daily responsibilities.
Janice first connected with the ASF through John’s rehabilitation program at Ability KC. She shared how ASF’s resources, like physical exercise (John especially enjoys his time in the pool) and social activities, helped lighten her caregiving load and provided a strong sense of community. “The ASF has been a key part of John’s recovery journey,” she said.
Despite the challenges, John has made significant progress. While his left leg remains affected, his left arm and voice improvements are encouraging. Janice highlighted John’s participation in various programs, emphasizing the importance of consistency.
Community support plays a vital role in their journey. Janice mentioned how John’s basketball buddies and Heartland Race Walkers club members have provided essential social connections. Participating in events like the ASF’s Stroke Walk and Roll has motivated John and underscored the impact of socialization on recovery.
To manage her caregiving responsibilities, Janice developed effective strategies, such as keeping a detailed list of medications and using organizational tools. Balancing caregiving with personal commitments remains challenging, but she encourages others to ask for help and use available resources. “It’s important to let go of certain responsibilities and delegate tasks,” she advised.
The emotional toll of caregiving has also impacted Janice and John’s relationship. While they face challenges, Janice shared how the stroke has brought them closer. “It has changed our relationship in unexpected ways,” she reflected.
“Caregivers are the unsung heroes in every stroke survivor’s journey. Their strength, patience, and dedication play a vital role in helping their loved ones recover and regain independence. The American Stroke Foundation is here to support both survivors and caregivers like Janice, who are navigating this journey together,” said Muzna, OTD, OTR/L and Program Director at the ASF.
Looking ahead, Janice remains hopeful for John’s continued recovery and values the American Stroke Foundation’s ongoing support. “Maintaining a positive attitude is key,” she emphasized, celebrating John’s progress.
